CLASS TITLE: INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT I - Special Education
180 DAYS @ 7 HOURS A DAY
BASIC FUNCTION:
Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups; monitors and report student progress.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Instructional Assistant I incumbents assist a certificated teacher by performing a variety of support functions in a regular classroom setting. Instructional Assistant II incumbents work within a complex program typically requiring additional skills and characterized by increased independence of action.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
- Tutor individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing and implementing instruction as directed by the teacher; maintain records of student progress.
- Participate as member of an instructional team including remediation teams.
- Prepare and organize lessons as directed by the teacher; administer and score a variety of tests according to established guidelines; assist in determining English proficiency of identified students.
- Assist in administering diagnostic and other tests; score and record test information.
- Monitor and report behavior of students according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior; check and assist students with lab work as necessary.
- Perform routine clerical duties such as preparation of instructional and classroom materials; operate copy machines; maintain classroom records; maintain attendance records.
- Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating audio-visual equipment, operating educational training equipment and distributing and collecting paper and supplies.
- Assist in overseeing students while in labs; provide for supplies inventory as necessary.
- Assist students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and general guidance.
- Confer, as needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
- Contact parents of students who are absent; make home visits as necessary.
- Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and regulations.
- Direct group activities of students as assigned; assist in monitoring lunchroom and playground activities as assigned; assist in emergency drills, assemblies, play periods and field trips.
- Participate in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

- Basic subjects taught in the District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.

- Operate instructional and office equipment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law and some experience in working with children in an organized setting.
ADDENDUM:
This job is considered a Safety Sensitive position because a single mistake by the employee can create an immediate threat of serious harm to students and fellow employees.

Instructional Assistant Addendum
All Instructional Assistants employed to work in the Clay County Public Schools from all funding sources will provide support to the students and teachers through the following activities:
- Complete student documentation as directed by certified staff/ This may involve keeping a daily log/journal, behavior/instructional charting, medical log/forms etc.
- Follow schedule developed by Principal and/or Supervisor, including beginning and ending time.
- Complete biweekly Instructional Aide Log and attach to time sheet.
- Participate in a minimum of 18 hours of Professional Development as assigned by the District and /or SBDM Council.
- Implement components of section 504 plans, which may include medical and physical procedures.
- Administration of medication and perform required health services such as tube feeding, catheterization, diabetic testing, etc., based on student needs when delegated by a physician, advanced registered nurse practitioner or registered nurse. Appropriate training and supervision by the school nurse will be provided.
- Assist in providing environmental, instructional, or assessment modifications based on student needs.
- Direct group activities of students as assigned; assist in monitoring lunchroom and playground activities as assigned; assist in emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips; and if necessary assist in bus monitoring.
- Assist students in such physical activities as putting on and taking off of outer wear, moving from room to room, using the restroom, grooming and other self-help tasks.
- Assist students in getting on and off the bus.
- Perform basic life support and safety activities as needed. Instructional assistants will receive CPR certification and be trained in accident response, choking response and other necessary medical procedures based on student needs.
- Perform safe lifting as needed after being appropriately trained.
- Diapering and toileting activities with students as needed after being appropriately trained.

All Instructional Assistants employed to work in the Clay County Public Schools from all funding sources will provide support to the students and teachers through the following activities and in addition, Instructional Assistants employed to work in the Alternative Education Program of the Clay County Public Schools will provide support to the students and teachers through the following activities:
- Complete student documentation as directed by certified staff. This may involve keeping a daily log/journal, behavior/instructional charting, medical log/forms etc.
- Follow schedule developed by Principal and/or Supervisor including beginning and ending time.
- Complete biweekly Instructional Aide Log and attach to time sheet.
- Participate in a minimum of 18 hours of Professional Development as assigned by the District and/or SBDM Council.
- Implement components of section 504 plans, which may include medical and physical procedures.

- Conduct behavioral observations, interviews, assist in administering, scoring or recording test information; read, understand and assist in implementing and monitoring students’ IEP’s.
- Assist students in such physical activities as putting on and taking off of outer wear, moving from room to room, using the restroom, grooming and other self-help tasks.
- Assist students in getting on and off the bus.
- Perform basic life support and safety activities as needed. Instructional assistants will receive CPR certification and be trained in accident response, choking response and other necessary medical procedures based on student needs.
- Perform safe lifting as needed after being appropriately trained.
- Diapering and toileting activities with students as needed after being appropriately trained.
- Assist students as needed with dependant feeding procedures.
- Utilize appropriate equipment in carrying out students’ individual; programs. This equipment may include adaptive feeding equipment, special classroom chairs/desks, special writing utensils, standers/sidelyers, recreational equipment, mats, wheelchairs, communication devices, technology and other equipment specified in student programs.
- Carry out activity programs as directed by certified staff such as adaptive P.E., positioning , range of motion, strengthening, feeling, use of equipment, early learning, PECS, augmentative communication, assistive technology etc.
- Communicate (with training) with students in their normal mode of communication (ex. Sign Language, augmentative communication).
